Let Your Light Shine Bright—Even When It Feels Dim
“I just never would have guessed you were a Christian.”
Those words hit me like a punch to the gut. They weren’t said with malice, but they cut just the same. What did that say about me? About the way I was living?
Have you ever had a moment like that—when someone’s words made you pause and ask yourself, Am I really letting my light shine? Are my actions pointing others to Christ, or have I let the world dim the light God placed inside me?
When Words Make You Reflect
When I told someone, “Well, I’m a Christian…” I was cut off by snorts and snickers. I was appalled. “Do you have something against Christians?” I asked boldly.
“No,” they replied, “I just never would have guessed you were a Christian.”
Their words sliced into my heart like daggers. Me? They couldn’t tell I was a Christian?
Those words, spoken over five years ago, still echo in my mind. If I—someone called to represent Christ—wasn’t even recognized as a Christian because of my actions and demeanor, what did that say about my Christian living? Was I truly reflecting Christ in my everyday life?
Small Reminders of God’s Radiance
Fast forward to 2024. Opening my Secret Santa gift from a coworker who barely knows me, I pulled out a beautiful cream and blue ceramic mug. Its words were delicately inscribed: “Fearfully and wonderfully made – Psalm 138:14.”
In the most unexpected yet reassuring way, this confirmed that while I’m not perfect, I’m living more in alignment with the life we’re called to live. It was as if God whispered, “You’re growing. Keep going.”
When we choose to live with intention, we allow God’s radiance to shine through us and impact the world around us.
As Matthew 5:14-16 reminds us:
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Are You Hiding Your Light?
So, sister, I’ll ask you this: Are you letting your light shine? Can others see God’s beauty and radiance reflected in you, or has the world dimmed your glow and hidden it under a bowl?
Christian living isn’t about perfection—it’s about progress. When you live in a way that honors God, you’re not just shining for yourself; you’re reflecting Christ for others to see.
Your Light Matters
We’re not called to perfection, but we are called to progress. It’s okay if you’ve had moments when your light felt dim—God still has a purpose for you. Take a step back today and ask, “How can I let my light shine brighter?”
Whether it’s through kindness, encouragement, or simply living with joy, your faith in action can make all the difference. Don’t hide your light. Let your light shine and trust that God is using you—right where you are—to point others to Him.
